Frequently Asked Questions

  • In order to prepare for an appointment, proper planning is key to long lasting, beautiful results. The following should be avoided:

    • NO caffeine, or alcohol for at least 48 hours before procedure. This includes tea, and energy drinks. (This will prevent excess bleeding, and minimizes swelling during the procedure, which will affect retention). Side note: excessive bleeding pushes the ink out of the skin, which means you will not retain color, and will have wasted both our time, and your money. If it is suspected that you have not followed the pre-care instructions, and have excessive bleeding, I will not continue to perform the procedure on you which means you will either have to reschedule, or you will have to choose a different procedure.

    • Do not exercise 24 hours prior to procedure, and 10 days after. Doing so will push pigment out of the skin resulting in poor retention.

    • Sun, and tanning should be avoided at least two weeks before.

    • DO NOT take aspirin, fish oil, vitamin e, or ibuprofen (unless medically necessary) 72 hours prior to your procedure.Tylenol is ok.

    • Avoid power shakes, and power greens, "hair skin and nail" supplements 24 hours prior, to prevent excessive bleeding.

    • Discontinue glycolics, chemical peels, and retin-a 4 weeks prior.

    • Refrain from using any Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) products close to eyebrow area, or any skin care products that encourage exfoliation 2 weeks prior to, and two weeks after your procedure.

    • Check your moisturizer, face wash, BB or CC creams, and makeup primers for anything that mentions acid.

    • You have to be off of any kind of accutane for 1 year. NO EXCEPTIONS!

    • You MUST inform artist if you are on any medications.

    • If you have any skin conditions, you are required to have a letter from your doctor stating it is okay to proceed with the procedure.

    • No brow waxing, or tinting one week prior. They will be shaped for you.

    • If there are any open wounds, pimples, bruises, or any other skin irritations on that area; please wait for them to be completely healed.

    • Fillers and botox should be done at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment, or 2 weeks after.

    • Any facial cosmetic procedures will have to wait a full 2 months to fully heal prior to appointment.

    • Failure to follow pre-care instructions may affect the outcome of your final result.

    • If I feel like you have not followed pre care instructions, (excessive bleeding) you will be sent home. Continuing to work while you are excessively bleeding is disruptive, and may cause poor retention. At that point, the service would be a waste of your money, and time, so please be sure to follow all instructions.

  • Both techniques vary not only in their look, but also in their technique.

Microblading is what people describe as appearing the most natural by simulating the look of hair like strokes to blend in with ones natural brow hair. It is performed using a tiny, disposable blade. Perfect for the non makeup wearers, and best suited on normal to dry skin types. Not suited for oily, or orange peel skin. Longevity: 1-2 years. Please note: The more hair you have, the more realistic the brows will appear. If you have really concentrated dense, coarse, or little to no brow hair at all, then it’s recommended that you go with ombré shading instead.

Ombré although it is known to give more of a makeup look, healed results can be quite versatile depending on the chosen outcome. For instance, a makeup look will cause for a more compact technique while others may choose to go the softer route resulting in more of a soft powdery effect based on hair texture, and skin. Needless to say, ombré brows can look as soft or as intense as you’d like. This technique is performed using a tattoo machine, and unlike microblading, there are no hairlike strokes within the brow, but more or less a shaded appearance that gradiates from soft fronts to darker tails. Best suited for all skin types especially oily, enlarged pores, and mature skin. Overall, ombré does better over time. Longevity: 1-3 years with touch ups in between to maintain.

  • Everyone has a different level of pain tolerance. Yes you will feel some sort of discomfort. Some have described the pain as mild to none. While others find it more annoying than anything. Topical numbing agents are used after initial pass. You will hear a scratch noise/sensation throughout. Music is usually played during the session, however, feel free to bring your own ear pods, and music if you feel it may distract you.

  • Microblading is the type of procedure that uses a fine blade to carve individual hairs strokes through a cut-like opening in the skin to replicate the appearance of real brow hairs. Nano blading is a more precise and updated version of microblading. Instead of using a manual blade to cut hairlike strokes into the skin, nano blading uses a digital device and smaller needles which create finer and more precise strokes by making tiny punctures into the skin grouped closer together to form a hair stroke that imitates the look of natural hairs. In terms of appearance, it's much easier to have more of a realistic look with nano blading as the strokes taper off at both ends of the hair. As opposed to microblading where both ends of the stroke can appear more blunt and structured. In the long run, it is best to choose nano blading as it is suited for all skin types, and is less invasive on the skin whereas with microblading (not recommended for oily, large pores, and or mature skin) there is great risk in developing scar tissue over time.

  • It is not necessary to have an in person consultation unless we feel there is a need for it, for at your appointment, we will have a thorough consultation.

Usually, photos are required at the time of booking where we look over them prior to your appointment. For clients with previous work from other artists, it is required that you send in a photo over to info@browsbylys.com prior to booking.

If you are adamant, and prefer an in person, or virtual consultation, we will accommodate you for a fee of $100 (that will go towards your appointment) for 30min. Please note: In person consultations do not mean any type of eyebrow mapping will be done. It is strictly a time for you to get any questions or concerns out.

  • Semi permanent makeup tends to last from 12 months to 3 years however, you will still need to touch-up in between in order to maintain the look. Color will slowly fade with time depending on skin type, lifestyle, daily skincare routines, etc.

  • Most likely so. Color can fade as much as 30-40% after the first session. This is considered normal, and is a good thing because it gives you time to reflect on shape, color, and overall to get used to your new look. In some cases, the initial session poses as more of the foundation or “building block” for the second session depending on skin type, age, genetic predisposition etc... On touch up day, it gives you the opportunity to make adjustments if need be, and it also allows for the artist to learn how your skin reacts to the pigment/techniques they’ve applied. Keep in mind, touch ups are to be booked during the week ONLY. No sooner, nor later. If you go over the allotted (6-8 week) time frame, you will be subject to a larger touch up fee.

  • Cosmetic tattooing is a two part process. You will need a touch up 6-8 weeks from the initial session, and yearly touch ups afterwards in order to maintain the look. Much like a tattoo, gradually with time the ink will fade. This naturally occurs with sun exposure, lifestyle, retention, skin routine etc.

  • After your initial, and touch up session, it is common to go 1.5-2 years between touch ups. Preferably, no more than one touch up is recommended per year - year and a half in order to preserve the integrity of the skin. Doing so more than necessary can cause scar tissue, and over saturation of color. It is in your best interest to let your brows fade about 40-50% before requesting a yearly touch up. If you are unsure, please email pictures to info@browsbylys.com and we’ll help you. Please note: Using a little brow powder or pencil to fill certain areas is totally normal!

  • While cosmetic tattooing is great for replacing a pencil or powder, it is normal to use a little brow powder or pencil to enhance color. For instance: When applying face makeup, you will most likely transfer foundation over your brows which will make the brows look dull. In this case, I advise clients to use a makeup wipe to wipe off excess foundation from the brows, or fill in with powder. Another example would be if your brows are at the point where it’s starting to fade, but you’re not quite yet ready for a touch up.

  • The procedure can take anywhere from 3-4 hours depending. Please allow a solid 4 hour window. This is not something you want to rush.

  • It takes about 2 weeks for the surface to heal, but complete healing takes a minimum of 30 days.

  • Unfortunately, there isn't an artist that can guarantee their work. Everyone's skin is different. Your retention will be dependent upon your skin type, texture, lifestyle, and aftercare. Please keep in mind, the procedure cannot be reversed easily, if at all.

  • Excessive Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during your appointment almost always results in poor retention. What happens is, the blood does not allow ink to penetrate into the skin by pushing the ink out. Furthermore, we risk the chance of pigment fading quickly, and or healing ashy. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow pre-care instructions by not having any type of blood thinners (alcohol, coffee, tea, aspirin, etc..) 24 hrs prior to your appointment, in order to help minimize bleeding.

Oily skin: While definitely not suited for microblading, oily skin is best suited for the ombré technique. Simply put, the excess of sebum makes it harder for pigment to penetrate without causing a blurred effect. Which is why hair strokes almost never heal crisp on this skin type. Along with blurred effects, oily skin tends to ash out color more than the normal skin type, pigment tends to fade quicker, and will sometimes, will require a third session (at an additional cost) for reinforcement of color.

Sun exposure: Increased exposure to the sun without the used of sunblock can cause premature fading. It is highly recommended that you apply sunblock to eyebrows everyday once healed.

Choice of color: The reality is, the lighter the color choice, the quicker they fade. That’s why it is always best to go slightly darker. On the flip side, in time darker colors run the risk of ashing out. This is quite normal and is usually corrected during annual sessions.

Skin routine: Exfoliating products, and anything used to fight acne and or anti-aging can cause premature fading. It’s best to avoid the eyebrows with such products as much as possible.

Not following your pre and aftercare requirements: By not following your pre and aftercare instructions, your run the risk of not having as best results as possible. Remember, this is your face. We give these instructions to ensure the best possible outcome by providing you with our service and information. The rest is up to you.

Please understand that results may vary from person to person, and are not guaranteed!

  • We tend to go off of your skin tone, natural undertone, and natural brow color. For the clients who are used to not having as much hair, it is advised that you start by wearing pencil, or powder some time before the procedure in order to get accustomed to having a brow.

  • During the first 7-10 days, brows will appear darker, then they will lighten, and become slightly thinner as they heal.

During the second week, brows will appear to have disappeared, but that's only because the skin will heal over the tattoo. In the next few weeks, the color will emerge again, and you will be healed. Color will lighten up to about 40% once fully healed, and shrink about 15% in size. That is why a second session is almost always recommended.

  • Yes! All needles and supplies are single-use only and are disposed of immediately after each procedure.

All equipment, tools, and stations are completely sanitized and disinfected prior to, and after each and every appointment with products that are EPA-registered, and hospital-grade.

  • Swelling will vary per client. It is usually minimal, and can last the day.

  • No need to call out of work. All you will need to do is follow the aftercare instructions.

  • Eyebrow tattooing with us is a three step process

All appointments begin with a thorough consultation where we will fill out a consent form, discuss aftercare, what to expect, and your goals. We will then proceed to take photos, and conduct your facial analysis. This process is very important because this is where we will evaluate, and come to find your ideal shape based on your facial features, shape, and bone structure. While inspiration photos are a great tool for direction, ultimately it is your anatomy that will guide us in finding the ideal shape for your features. Together, we will come to a decision on what your ideal shape would be.

Once we have come to an agreement on a shape, we will then begin the eyebrow mapping process. In this phase, based off of your facial analysis, we will conduct what is called your pre-draw, or “eyebrow mapping.” This will give you a sense of what your brows could potentially look like.

Note: This process can take up to an hour, or more. The goal is always to try to create brows that are as symmetrical as your facial structure will allow, but it is important to keep in mind that on very rare occasions will you find a person who has a perfectly balanced face. That being said, we like to encourage our customers to come into their sessions with realistic expectations.

Once we agree on your ideal shape, we will begin the process of getting you to the brows you’ve always dreamed of!

We will begin the process by outlining your shape, and applying a topical anesthetic to ease the mild discomfort you may or may not experience.

Our job is to keep you as calm and comfortable during your session, and we do this by keeping a nice, clean, and calm environment with soft music playing in the background that almost always puts our clients to sleep : )

Once we are finished with the procedure, we will take after photos. We will re-review your aftercare instructions, and what to expect once more in order for you to achieve the best results as possible. At this point, it is your responsibility to do your due diligence to ensure you protect your investment.
